Church & Society
The Board of Church and Society of the West Michigan Conference United Methodist Church represents more that 400 United Methodist Churches in the western side of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.
It advocates for the church on social issues, especially those affecting the poor and marginalized of our communities. “Peace with justice” is one of its goals. Each year, it presents a Peacemaker of the Year to an individual or a group that best exemplifies peacemaking in the name of Christ. For 2011, the award was presented to Justice for Our Neighbors, ministering to immigrants in the Grand Rapids and Holland areas.
The Board also presents an annual Peace Sermon of the Year award. For 2011, the award was presented to the Rev. Jorge Rodriguez, pastor of La Nueva Esperanza United Methodist Church, Grand Rapids.
